First 2022 Collectors Club Release Tomorrow (Honeybear)!

The email announcing Honeybear’s release tomorrow (March 1st) just came out:

I have been eagerly awaiting this release, but I am unhappy that Honeybear is a “limited quantities - while supplies last” deal. We can all guess he will sell out quite fast. I was thinking that Breyer would repeat what they did with Lafayette last year, which gave the option to backorder Lafayette once the models in the warehouse sold out. I suppose that the Lafayette backorder fiasco helped Breyer decide it wasn’t worth the hassle. As a refresher, some collectors  who had backordered Lafayette got him immediately and some who were supposed to get him immediately ended up on the backorder list. There was also a shipping delay, which pushed the backorders to a later delivery date. Annnnnnnyway, I will unfortunately be at work during his release time, so I will need to get someone to order him for me. I could try to run into the bathroom at that time, but reception isn’t the greatest inside the building…oh wait, I have it! Once in the bathroom around 2 pm EST I can jump on the sink and crawl out of the window, use the gutter downspout to climb up to the roof for the best reception, and then proceed to order Honeybear. Then all I have to do is climb back in through the window and pretend a Misson Impossible moment never occurred. The plan is set, my friends! Easy peasy. Muhuhuhuhuhuhuhu! Honeybear shall be mine!

Good luck to everyone who wants to get one!

2022 Vintage Club First Release: Cooper

The email for Cooper, the first release of the 2022 Vintage Club, appeared a couple of days ago:

Hahahaha, I had been trying to hold off purchasing my second SMC Dax so I could combine him with Cooper. The deadline for ordering Dax was yesterday, but I broke down and ordered Dax on 2/20 so I would not forget about him (he’s still showing unfulfilled). I ordered Cooper yesterday so I don’t have to keep reminding myself to order him before the deadline (which is 3/10/22), plus I should get him sooner. I have always liked the Appaloosa Performance Horse (APH) mold; he’s standing, looking dependable and alert, and ready to spring into action in a moment’s notice. As a kid, he was a horse I wanted to ride. I found his tail fascinating, especially since he looked so much like an ancient black and white photo of an Appaloosa I had from an old horse magazine (which I think may have been from the 1960s).

I’m glad that Breyer decided to include the bridle and bareback pad as a nod to the Brenda Breyer Gift Set (produced from 1980-1985). It may also inspire me to finish up yet ANOTHER one of my unfinished projects, which you have already guessed are bareback pads. I have a chronic problem of starting projects but never quite getting around to finishing them. I haven’t forgotten the Operation Faux Zugspitze project, but it’s been a tad cold to spray him outside. The few days that were somewhat decent didn’t work out because I would not have had the time to rinse and scrub him the next day, and I don’t want to leave the oven cleaner on him for days on end. The weather should start warming soon, meaning more opportunity to spray one day and scrub the next. Hmmm, maybe I will try to finish at least one bareback pad before Cooper arrives…

Stop Sending HEARSES to People!

Begin humming Chopin’s Funeral March to set the mood.

A somewhat unusual start to a blog post, and it’s not even close to Halloween. The week before last I skittered into the Post Office to mail a horse out for a trade. This is the model I traded:

Cheery, beautifully painted Vermeer, whose paint job really *is* awesome, but I just can’t warm up to the mold. I tried to like him, and I know he is a Friesian Sporthorse, but I prefer the baroque style Friesians. I had intended to sell him, but an opportunity came up so his tail was traded. Annnnnnyway, Vermeer was going outside of the US, which means completing customs forms. Not a big deal, and I took my time writing everything very neat so there would be no problems reading anything on the form. I declared one plastic horse, and thought good, nice and easy. I get up to the PO clerk, and hand her the form and box. She brings the customs form about an inch from her face, slowly reading it. Ummmmm, okaaaaaay. Suddenly she loudly screeches, “A HEARSE?! ONE PLASTIC HEARSE?!” Naturally, everyone stops to stare, the murmur of the PO patrons dies down into silence, and the facial expressions of the clerk and customer next to me were hilarious. Of course, I was wearing all black as usual so that added to the moment. I told her no, not a hearse, but a horse. One plastic horse. She examines the form again and then declares, “It’s right here! One plastic horse.” Hahahahaha, yes, that’s exactly what I wrote on the customs form, one plastic horse. Funnily enough, I had always wanted to make a hearse to hitch my Breyers to from the time I was a child. But making a horse drawn vehicle of any sort is a daunting undertaking (catch the pun?), but perhaps this should be the year that I seriously think about attempting it. I know I’ve seen a picture of a model horse drawn hearse, so it’s definitely been done, and probably a few times over. Hmmmmmm…….

Oh yeah, back to the trade. This is the model I traded Vermeer for:

A Cardinal! I cannot express how happy I am with this trade. As I wasn’t drawn for Cardinal, I had pretty much put him in the ‘probably will never own’ category, and then an opportunity presented itself. If I had a Tigger tail I’d be bouncing all over the universe. Uninteresting fact: I had a friend in high school who was related to the real Christopher Robin (the only child of Winnie the Pooh author A.A. Milne).

My Cardinal is quite talented; he can balance on two legs while on top of the classy grill:

One thing I think Breyer should have done differently is the color of the tummy stamp. The yellow is too light and I think a black tummy stamp would have been a better option:

I am so, so grateful to the hobbyist with whom I traded. This is the second time I have traded for a model that went into the ‘will probably never own’ category. Funnily enough, that trade was for a draft as well. In 2009, BreyerWest had a SR model on the Clydesdale Mare mold called Del Mar. She is a glossy dark dapple bay, and was limited to 300 pieces. I conga her, and I really wanted a Del Mar. However, she was hard to get. The ones that did show up for sale were priced too high for my liking (hahaha, nowadays we wouldn’t even blink at her asking prices back then). One day I was looking at ads on MH$P and found a want to trade ad… someone wanted to trade their Del Mar for Gala, a BF SR on the Five Gaiter mold which is a clearware blue mottled-tortoise shell decorator. I did not know the hobbyist, but she had all green lights regarding transactions, so I contacted her about trading, and it was a go. I sent out my Gala and she sent out Del Mar, and I was not disappointed when Del Mar arrived. I was so happy to have been able to trade for her. Now I am fortunate to have had two trades that yielded drafters I wanted!

2022 Stablemates Club First Release

The SMC is kicking off with Dax! Breyer describes him as follows: “Dax, a delightful Appaloosa Fighting Stallion, has a richly-shaded dun coat that has been decorated with a large Appaloosa blanket and features blue interference.” Interesting that Breyer is using interference again in this year’s club. Last year it was purple interference on Raider, I believe.

Oh looky here! Because of the delay in getting this post up, my Dax appeared a couple of days ago so now I can post in hand photos of him:

Dax is painted quite nicely, and as for the interference, it looks purple to me. The interference is limited to his head and the left side of his tail (the right side is devoid of the purple):

Overall, I am happy with this little guy, but I do wish Breyer would not bother with the purple/blue interference paint. He would look just as nice without it.

Quick Blog Update

*waves like a muppet*

So sorry for the unannounced leave of absence! Things had been really busy as is the norm, but then I started to not feel well last weekend. I wasn’t Covid-ized, but I do have some kidney issues that decided to flare up. I was feeling exhausted and couldn’t do a lot of things, including writing proper blog posts. I just had no energy. But now that I am feeling better, I shall be back to blogging. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Breyerfest 2022 LE Crystal Reveal: Lorelei

A Sneak Peek Butt photo was used for the last Breyerfest Blog post, with the full reveal within the post:

I saw it and was surprised…but happily surprised. Could it be? Is it really her? One of the earliest Breyer molds (based on a Maureen Love sculpture for Hagen-Renaker), the Proud Arabian Mare (PAM) was first produced by Breyer in the 1950s. She went out of production for around ten years or so while Breyer and Hagen-Renaker were negotiating the terms regarding use of the mold (the Breyer/Hagen-Renaker story shall wait for another time). Indeed, the ever popular Proud Arabian Mare is this year’s Breyerfest crystal. She has been miniaturized and crystallized, and is sure to be on many collectors’ want lists. She was named after the big rock, Lorelei, which is located on the banks of the Rhine River:

Unfortunately, due to Breyer’s bad photography, we cannot get a decent view of her. Lorelei is camouflaged quite nicely against the white background. Nevertheless, I’m sure she’ll be quite the stunner in person, and is actually the first crystal I may add to my collection. I love the crystals, but I’m afraid of them getting broken.  Same thing with any easily breakable horse—I admire them from a (safe) distance. A few decades ago, the Hagen-Renakers I had were utterly destroyed during a move. As in smashed to smithereens. Of all the boxes to get flattened, it was the H-R one. I had carefully wrapped and packed them, but it was no match for a crushed box. :(    Lorelei will cost $50 and will be the largest crystal run to date with a run number of 2,200 pieces.

Breyerfest 2022 LE Reveals: Two LE Stablemates

Lololololol, here’s a reason to love geometric shapes:

Now that you’ve uncrossed your eyes from the busyness of the patterns on the ponies and their backgrounds, we’ll talk about them in the order in which they were revealed. First up is Wittelsbach, a blue and white decorator on the SM Sharif mold which honors the Bavarian flag:

If this color and pattern look familiar, this is probably why:

Newmarket, a Breyerfest Special Run from 2018 on the Flash mold, now has a mini-me doppelgänger! I don’t conga the Flash mold, but now I kind of want to get a Newmarket to be matchy-matchy with Wittelsbach. Wittelsbach will be available to all ticket holders, is priced at $15, and is a run of 5,000 pieces.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooallll!!!!! The second Limited Edition Stablemate reveal is Torlinie, a soccer ball inspired decorator on the G2 Clydesdale mold:

Okay, I did not see that coming - a second LE Stablemate, and the fact that he is disguised as a soccer ball and sporting a hip patch representing the German flag. I cannot decide if he’s shimmery or pearly—maybe he is a shimmery pearl? We’ll have to wait until after Breyerfest to find out. It is important to note that like the LE Rhenish Draft, Torlinie is available to all ticket holders, but can only be purchased online. He is limited to 4,000 pieces and is priced at $15.

Stop the Presses!!! Limited Edition Breyerfest Georg!!!

Okay so I’m a tad excited about yesterday’s reveal from Breyer…okay, actually SUPER EXCITED that there is another attainable Georg coming up. We all figured that the Georg mold would somehow make an appearance at this year’s Breyerfest, and since he wasn’t used for any of the special runs, he became the prime suspect for the surprise model. I had resigned myself that the Georg mold would end up being the surprise SR and I would have to hunt them all down. Breyer popped up a Sneak Peek Strip, which I vaguely thought may be Georg, but assumed it probably was a raffle model, so I didn’t look too close at the photo and moved on to other things. I have to hand it to Breyer, this reveal was a heck of a surprise:

Breyer made this non-portrait Rhenish Draft a Limited Edition model which will only be available as an online purchase to all ticket holders. The Rhenish Draft is priced at $75 and will be a run of 5,000 pieces. Many are also speculating the possibility of him being available to order as a glossy, which was an option last year for the Limited Editions. I think Breyer is likely to do glossy orders as they know they can sell truckloads of this guy in a glossy finish. A number of 5,000 matte may seem like a lot, but given the popularity of the Georg mold and how having a virtual component to Breyerfest means more people purchasing tickets, I’d be surprised if they didn’t sell out. The Rhenish Draft from another angle:

I have to say that I am very happy that Breyer has made this Georg attainable…Georgs for all!
